  • Reading

I've been reading more recently.  During and just after our vacation, I finished off Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This book was so much different than I was expecting.  I was expecting more about Zen and not at all this idea of Quality.  And except for some slogging in the middle, I found it quite interesting.  I'd like to make some of ideas part of my functioning, but that we'll see.

I also read the last two Harry Potter books again for the first time since they came.  Now that leaves only the fifth book that I haven't reread.  I really enjoyed them, especially Book 7 that I thought was a bit too much to slog through the first time around.

And I just started Supernatural by Graham Hancock.  I love the coincidences that take place when ever I start reading one of his books.  Not only is the first part about Pech Merle that we visited a few years about, but just the other night there was a documentary on Arte that was talking about cave paintings in western Europe.

And the book that I just finished and was a lot of fun was the second volume of Mes voisins les Yamada (My Neighbors the Yamadas).  I just love these characters.  A nice bit of light reading.

  • The Festival

Here's a quick post about the Festival Interceltique.  After last year, we knew we had to go this year.  We had such a great time, and there were several bands that I wanted to hear, or hear again.  Plus our friends were playing as well.  Each year the festival invites one of the celtic countries as its special guest and this year it was Galicia, which isn't either of our favorite type of celtic music, but it isn't like that is the only thing happening either.  And we were surprised to actually enjoy some of the galician bands.  But, oddly enough, the two concerts that I had most wanted to see were the two that were most disappointing.  The first was the Welsh band that we had loved last year, Taran.  Unfortunately, the bombard/shaum player wasn't with them this year and that alone left a certain hole, plus the sound mixing was just horrible for that concert.  And the that was the same problem for the other concert.  The mixing for those two concerts was just excruciatingly disappointing. The second concert was Gwennyn, a Breton pop singer.  I'm still glad to have seen both these concerts, but I just wish the sound had been better.  They deserved it.  I have some pretty good photos of Gwennyn that I could post, or can be seen on Facebook.

Ouor biggest surprise was the Manx band Skeeal.  We hadn't ever heard of them, but since we had never heard Manx music, I thought we should go.  They are a five piece band, two singers, two flute players and a guitarist.  And even tho the music is simply arranged, it really works.  They sing in all three gaelics, Manx, Scottish and Irish, which is unusual, and very cool.  We bought both of their albums, and I haven't stopped listening.

We also saw a bit of FullSet, an Irish group and wow, they were some of the best musicians I have ever seen.  The best uilleann piping I've ever heard, I think.  They are the only ones that I took any video of and you can barely make out any images, but the music is there, so I'm sharing it with you.

And of course I got to hang out in a kilt and even had my picture taken with some vacationers.  We had a really great time, between the sunburns on the beach and the concerts in the evenings.

  • Argh!  I just can't seem to get around to writing here, or even answering emails seems like an ordeal.  And I almost thought that I was going to give up Xanga all together until I saw that you can now post your Xanga to Facebook.

Vacation was pretty great and August just flew by.  I need to post about vacation, but I don't have the time now.

I'm really grooving on this at the moment.

I'm really listening to an eclectic mix of things at the moment.  Does anyone actually care about my music posts?  I'm getting all worked up about music stuff again, but thinking that no one wants to hear me go on about it.  I'm thinking that once I start my new blog, I'll stick the obsessive music posts over there.

And for pictures, here's a photo album from our vacation with me looking grumpy in a kilt.  I don't know why I thought it best not to smile.

  • Silence, ça pousse

Yes, I've been on silent mode recently.  Lots of things happening.  I have thousands of photos to get online.

So what's been up?  We did Gay Pride in Paris at the end of June and had a blast.  And then next day, we drove out into the counrtyside and took a nice walk between the fields and when we got back, found our back windshield had been broken in.

We are leaving tomorrow after Tristan finishes work for Brittany.  I've been craving this since being sick this winter.  Interceltic Festival, finally getting to have a real place to wear my kilt and the beach.  I'm so excited.

I'm looking forward to the music, and the air.  Just need to decompress.  And maybe when I get back, I'll be less antisocial.

Edit:  Oh yeah, I just bought a new monitor for our computer.  We went from a 17 in screen to a HUGE 24 inch screen.  It is awesome, and it was so cheap!  I'm loving working on it.

  • Birthday thoughts

I'm somewhat reflective this birthday.  This year has pretty much sucked so far and 37 feels like a non-birthday.  And I'm still trying to build up the momentum that I felt at the beginning of the year.  But I don't feel bad.  Yeah, I'm approaching 40 and I still don't have my life together, but apart from the occasional sense of panic, I feel ok.  My health is finally back to being close to normal.  I'm definitely healing.  And life just moves along.

We hung out with friends this weekend, and I got to celebrate my birthday without really trying. I piggy-backed another birthday party, but it was nice without being over-involved or me having to be the center of attention.  We also spent a the better part of saturday making macarons for the first time.  It was certainly an experience, one I've been wanting to try for some time.  Very time consuming, and they didn't really turn out correctly, but they still were delicious.

Been heavily into Gaiman recently.  I finished Absolute Sandmans 3 and 4.  I just fall into these books.  And I still can't believe how intricately constructed the story is.  I also received Crazy hair and The Eternals TPB which I've already devoured and I just finished Endless Nights. Eternals really revists some of the Sandman themes.

I'm also trying to finish up The Dancing Wu Li Masters and I'm about a third into Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is really not at all what I was expecting, but I'm really enjoying it.  Musically, things are rather hit and miss.

I've been dieting recently and it is going ok.  I'm trying to get off enough weight before August so that I'm comfortable in my kilt at the Interceltic Festival.

So that's my day.  I have class to give this afternoon, and then we'll be meeting at T's mom's to eat together.
